JOB DESCRIPTION

DEPUTY COUNTY INSPECTOR

BUILDING INSPECTION DEPARTMENT

NATURE OF DUTIES:

This is skilled inspection responsibilities to secure and maintain compliance codes which govern building construction, alterations, and/or demolition, with emphasis on HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems. The work includes the inspection of a variety of building systems installations to determine compliance with legally established standards. General work assignments include independent field inspections and require the application of reasonable judgement relating to established codes. Advice will be available from supervision for unusual work problems with all activities being reviewed periodically for conformance with job goals.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

– Inspects buildings in the course of construction, alterations and/or demolition for general conformity with standard codes

– Reviews construction plans for general conformity with standard codes

– Communicates with architects, building owners and contractors concerning the code enforcement process

– Maintains reports for all inspections

– Performs related work as required

– Accepts direction from Department Manager as required

NECESSARY EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

-Considerable knowledge of methods and techniques concerning mechanical codes

-In depth knowledge on the regulations and laws relating to building construction

-Considerable knowledge of possible defects and flaws in building construction and corrective measures necessary

-Ability to comprehend and work from plans and blueprints

NECESSARY EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS: (continued)

-Ability toestablish and maintain effective working relationships with all other employees, contractors, design professionals and the general public

-Must be able to present ideas effectively, both orally and written

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

-High School Graduate or equivalent with supplementary courses in engineering related courses directed toward building structures

-A minimum of five (5) years experience as a building inspector, engineer, architect or in a working environment as a supervisor or lead mechanic over HVAC, plumbing and electric work environment

-Certification as inspector by model code agency or ability to become so certified within six (6) Months of employment

-Reports to County Building Director
